
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. Latifah is the second child of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her political activism and acting skills , as well as for her talent for rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the title "delicate, sensitive" when she was eight years old. Latifah began singing in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in a production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah was motivated by her mother who was in constant contact with the choir and the students. Mark James, a local disc jockey well-known as D.J., was invited to the celebration.
